The Williamson County Justice Center

Family cases for Georgetown, Round Rock, Cedar Park, Leander, Hutto, Taylor, and Liberty Hill are all filed with the Williamson County District Clerk and heard at the Justice Center, 405 Martin Luther King Jr. Street. The county's district courts and county courts at law share the family docket, each with an associate judge who hears most temporary orders and routine matters.

Williamson County's Standing Order attaches to every case at filing. It is broader than many clients expect: it restricts not only selling property but also changing beneficiaries, cancelling utilities on the family home, and disparaging the other parent in front of the children. Eric reviews it with every Georgetown client on the first call.

The county's judges expect cases to be mediated before trial and tend to reward parties who come to court with organized financial disclosures. Preparation is the advantage, and it is where Eric spends his time.

Every situation is unique. Eric will evaluate yours in a confidential consultation.

Gray divorce and Sun City

Georgetown has one of the largest retirement communities in Texas, and a meaningful share of the county's divorces involve spouses over 55. These cases are rarely about custody and almost entirely about property division: pensions, IRAs, 401(k)s, Social Security timing, a paid-off house, and sometimes a second home or a business sold years ago.

Retirement accounts are divided by Qualified Domestic Relations Order, and the drafting matters — a QDRO with the wrong survivor-benefit language can cost a spouse hundreds of dollars a month for life. Separate-property claims for assets owned before the marriage or inherited during it have to be traced with records that may be decades old. Eric has handled these cases for years and knows what the plan administrators will accept.

Spousal maintenance is also more common in long marriages. Texas caps court-ordered maintenance at $5,000 a month or 20% of the payer's income, but contractual alimony negotiated into the decree has no cap and is often the right tool when one spouse has been out of the workforce for years.

Families with children

Georgetown ISD families face the same three questions as everyone else: the house, the children's schedule, and support. Texas presumes joint managing conservatorship; custody disputes are over primary residence and the geographic restriction. Child support follows the guideline percentages up to the $11,700 cap on net monthly resources.

Eric also handles grandparent rights cases, which arise more often in Georgetown than in most of the region, when a grandparent has been raising a grandchild or has been cut off from one after a parent's death, incarceration, or substance problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are Georgetown divorces heard?

+

At the Williamson County Justice Center, 405 Martin Luther King Jr. Street, Georgetown. All Williamson County family cases are heard there.

We are retired. Does the court divide Social Security?

+

No. Social Security benefits are not divisible property in a Texas divorce, but a spouse married ten years or more may be entitled to benefits on the other's record. Pensions, IRAs, and 401(k)s are divisible and are usually split by QDRO.

Is my inheritance separate property?

+

Property inherited by one spouse is separate property if it can be traced. If it was mixed with community funds or used to buy a jointly titled asset, tracing becomes the whole case. Keep the records and raise it early.

How long does a Williamson County divorce take?

+

At least 60 days from filing. Agreed cases finalize shortly after. Contested cases typically run six to twelve months, with mediation ordered before trial.

Do you handle grandparent custody cases in Georgetown?

+

Yes. Texas grandparent standing is narrow, but when a parent has died, is incarcerated, is unfit, or when losing the grandparent would significantly harm the child, access or custody can be ordered. See the grandparent rights page.
